Wo kommen eigentlich unsere Rohstoffe her? Wie werden sie abgebaut? Und was für Auswirkungen hat der Export in den globalen Norden für die Abbaubedingungen und die Menschen im globalen Süden? Mit diesen Fragen beschäftigen sich die Künstlerin Ana Alenso und die Politikwissenschaftlerin Anna Dobelmann. In ihren künstlerischen Arbeiten nimmt Ana Alenso konkrete Fallbeispiele in den Blick, etwa die Erdölförderung oder den Goldabbau in Lateinamerika. Die Ergebnisse ihrer intensiven Recherchen und Gespräche mit Aktivist*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen präsentiert sie in großformatigen Installationen. Für die Ausstellung Ruhr Ding: Klima von Urbane Künste Ruhr arbeitet Alenso an einer Arbeit über den Goldabbau im venezolanischen Orinoco-Gebiet.

Anna Dobelmann ist studierte Politikwissenschaftlerin und promovierte Soziologin und hat an der Freien Universität Berlin und der Philipps-Universität Marburg zu Landkonflikten und Rohstoffausbeutung geforscht und gelehrt. Sie setzt sich wissenschaftlich mit den Auswirkungen von Rohstoffreichtum und -ausbeutung sowie den globalen Zusammenhängen, in die sie eingebunden sind, auseinander und ist Mitherausgeberin des Wörterbuchs Land und Rohstoffkonflikte (transkript 2019).

Gemeinsam diskutieren sie mit Solvej Ovesen, Kuratorin der Galerie Wedding | Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst anhand von Ana Alensos Arbeit über Ressourcenförderung, Rohstoffpolitik und die Möglichkeiten von künstlerischer Forschung und Aktivismus.

Where do our raw materials actually come from? How are they mined? And what impact does export to the global North have on the mining conditions and people in the global South? These are the questions that artist Ana Alenso and the political scientist Anna Dobelmann deal with.

In her artistic works, Ana Alenso focuses on concrete case studies, such as oil production or gold mining in Latin America. She presents the results of her intensive research and discussions with activists and scientists in large-format installations. For the exhibition ‚Ruhr Ding: Klima‘ by Urbane Künste Ruhr, Alenso is currently working on a new work about gold mining in the Venezuelan Orinoco region.

Anna Dobelmann studied political science and holds a doctorate in sociology. She has researched and taught on land conflicts and the exploitation of raw materials at the Freie Universität of Berlin and the Philipps-Universität of Marburg. She scientifically examines the effects of resource wealth and exploitation and the global contexts in which they are embedded. She is co-editor of the dictionary Land and Resource Conflicts (transkript 2019).

Based on Ana Alenso’s work, we will discuss resource extraction, resource policies, and the possibilities of artistic research and activism together with Solvej Ovesen, curator at Galerie Wedding | Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst.
