Der Film erzählt über das Leben der Polizisten im heruntergekommenen Stadtteil South Bronx in New York. Für die Polizei ist die Arbeit an dieser Polizeistation, die sie als »Fort Apache« bezeichnen eine Strafe. Nur vier Prozent der dort ansässigen Polizisten sprechen Spanisch obwohl der Stadtteil überwiegend von Puertorikanern bewohnt wird.

Die Doku zeigt den Stand der Kultur und speziell der Rap-Schiene aus einer Vielzahl von Perspektiven: Rund 80 bekannte Künstler kommen hier zu Wort und schildern, was es mit diesem Ding namens Hip Hop auf sich hat. Natürlich kann man in knapp 90 Minuten nicht jedes Thema in aller Tiefe beleuchten, trotzdem ist Rhyme & Reason ein sehr informativer und unterhaltsamer Film, ein angenehmer Flashback für Kenner, aber auch eine hochinteressante Studie für jeden Musikinteressierten, der mit Hip Hop bisher nichts am Hut hatte.

From the sight of a police officer this movie depicts the life in New York’s infamous South Bronx. In the center is »Fort Apache«, as the officers call their police station, which really seems like an outpost in enemy’s country. The story follows officer Murphy, who seems to be a tuff cynic, but in truth he’s a moralist with a sense for justice. A classic gritty New York movie, by some dubbed as not as good as Serpico, but still a relevant depiction of the early 80´s in the Bronx.

Not technically a cop movie, this documentary that covers the US hiphop scene and features interviews with many of its stars, shows many special and funny styles in the interview situations. It also perhaps offers a glimpse of how close the underworld sometimes was to the music industry, through the realism of the style of this movie. Also; are cops and crooks sometimes closer to each other than they think; just bordering thin lines of laws and paragraphs?
