Eine Ausstellung von Antje Engelmann und Cyrill Lachauer im Rahmen von UP (Unsustainable Privileges) kuratiert von Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung und Solvej Helweg Ovesen

This land is your land I This land is my land ist eine Ausstellung, die von der Nähe in der Ferne und der Unmöglichkeit von Abgrenzung berichtet. Es wird nicht von bestehenden binären Vereinfachungen der Welt ausgegangen, sondern handelt vielmehr vom Denken in Kreuzungen, Wendepunkten, Überschneidungen und Verzweigungen.
In Antje Engelmanns und Cyrill Lachauers Arbeiten sind Nähe und Distanz zu Land und Selbst ein zentrales Thema. In der dialogischen Kombination ihrer Arbeiten, die größtenteils auf gemeinsamen Reisen durch Nordamerika entstanden sind, geht es um die Einschreibung des Menschen in die Natur und die Unnatürlichkeit von menschlichen Grenzziehungen. Als Folksänger Woody Guthrie 1940 den Song »God Blessed America for Me« schrieb und später in »This Land Is Your Land« – von dem die Ausstellung ihren Titel entliehen hat – umbenannte, tat er dies als sarkastische Antwort auf Irving Berlins »God Bless America«. Teil dieser Auseinandersetzung ist nicht nur die gegenwärtige politische Situation um die amerikanisch-mexikanische Grenze. Die verschiedenen Phasen der Besiedlung des Kontinents in der Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft stehen gelichberechtigt nebeneinander und sind Teil desselben Prozesses. Die Ironie des Schicksals ist, dass das Land, in dem This land is your land I This land is my land geboren wurde, jenes Land ist, in dem indigene Völker durch spanische, holländische, französische und britische Kolonialherren ihres Landes zwangsenteignet wurden.
Für die Galerie Wedding haben die Künstler*innen eine mäanderartige Zusammenstellung aus einer Vielzahl neuer Arbeiten entwickelt, die sich dem Besitz von Land, welcher immer auch eine Behauptung von Macht ist, aus verschiedenen Perspektiven nähert und sich eine komplexe Erzählung über die Möglichkeiten in der Betrachtung von Landschaft entfaltet.

An exhibition by Antje Engelmann and Cyrill Lachauer within the frame of UP (Unsustainable Privileges) curated by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung and Solvej Helweg Ovesen

This land is your land I This land is my land is supposed to be an exhibition that is evidence of the nearness in the afar and the impossibility of demarcating and existing in the simplicities of binaries, but rather thinking or being in points of intersection, crossroads, and junctions.
In the works of Antje Engelmann and Cyrill Lachauer, proximity and distance to land and self are a central theme. The dialogical combination of their works, most of which relate to their travels in North America, is about the inscription of the human innature and the unnaturality of man-drawn borders. Folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote »God Blessed America for Me« in 1940 – later to be renamed as »This Land Is Your Land« from which the exhibition has lent its title – as a sarcastic response to Irving Berlin’s »God Bless America«. Not only is the current political situation about the American-Mexican border part of this investigation. The various stages of settlement of the continent in the past, present and future stand side by side as part of the same process. The irony of destiny is that the land in which This land is your land I This land is my land was born is the land which was forcefully taken away from the native peoples of the lands by successions of Spanish, Dutch, French and British colonialists.
For Galerie Wedding the artists have developed a meandering compilation of a multitude of new works that approach land ownership, which is always an assertion of power, from different perspectives, and a complex narrative about the possibilities of viewing landscape.
