Das diesjährige Ausstellungspogramm UP (Unsustainable Privileges) der Galerie Wedding widmet sich mit vier Einzelausstellungen und einem Performance- und Diskussionsprogramm weiter dem Thema Migration, aber auch den Möglichkeiten, wie unsere Privilegien in Nordeuropa anders zu verteilen wären. Den Anfang macht der deutsch-türkische Künstler Viron Erol Vert, der die Galerie in ein »Dreamatory«, eine Art Schlaflabor oder Trauminstitut verwandelt. Das Performanceduo Driftmachine entwirft dafür eigens sphärische Klänge, die auf Schlafgötter wie Morpheus, Phobetor und Phantasos Bezug nehmen.

Viron Erol Vert nutzt diesen Hintergrundsound für seine Ausstellungsanordnung von zwölf verschiedenen Betten mit jeweils passenden Nachttischen und Lampen, die zugeschnitten auf die verschiedenen Komfortbedürfnisse unterschiedlicher Schläfer*innen ist und die Galerie in einen geschützten, demokratischen Raum zum Träumen verwandelt. In diesem künstlich geschaffenen Schlaflabor können Leute zusammenkommen und sich bewusst die Zeit nehmen, ihre Träume aus der letzten Nacht zu erzählen und aufzuschreiben. Sie können sich hier sogar zu einer Siesta hinlegen und sich ausruhen.

Zu bestimmten Terminen werden Traumdeuter*innen eingeladen, die auf Wunsch die Träume der Besucher*innen interpretieren. Täglich wird im »Dreamatory« ein Traum des Tages ausgewählt und veröffentlicht, so dass die Träume Raum im Alltag bekommen. Die Ausstellung verfügt über eine angeschlossene Bibliothek, dem  »Dreamatory Wisdom Center«, dort wird Fachliteratur zum Thema Traum in Wissenschaft und Mythologie angeboten, in die man sich im schummrigen Licht von Leselampen vertiefen kann.

Vert stellt uns das »Dreamatory« in einer Zeit zur Verfügung, in der wir angesichts von Kriegen, von terroristischen Gewaltakten und rechtspopulistischer Hetze durch Angst zum Schweigen gebracht werden und verstummen, in der sowohl die Worte als auch die Räume fehlen, um uns auszudrücken und miteinander zu sprechen. Er bietet somit einen Zufluchtsraum, in dem wir uns für einen Moment der Außenwelt entziehen können, um uns einzulassen auf unsere Träume und Ängste und um unsere Erlebnisse zu verarbeiten.

So wie der Ausstellungstitel einem Gedicht von Viron Erol Vert entstammt, so stellt die Ausstellung eine Transkription seiner Poesie in den Raum dar. Im Kontext des Unterbewusstseins von Schlaf und Traum zielt die Ausstellung darauf ab, Reflexionen und Widerstände aus dem gesellschaftspolitischen Raum zusammenzubringen. Sie schlägt einen Raum vor, in dem eine Gemeinschaft geschaffen wird, in der Nicht-Angst und Nicht-Schweigen erforscht und praktiziert wird. Dabei zieht sie auch die Tatsache in Betracht, dass wir zwar alle die Fähigkeit zum Träumen besitzen, aber dass es auch ein Luxus ist, sich an die eigenen Träume zu erinnern, da durch die Brutalität der Realität unsere Träume zum Schweigen gebracht werden können.

Oneiro Trilogy Live Performance No.1 »Morpheus« by Driftmachine from 8 to 11 pm

This year’s UP Wedding Program (Unsustainable Privileges) from Galerie Wedding continues its devotion the subject of migration with four individual exhibitions and a performance & discussion program, as well as exploring the possibilities for how our privileges in Northern Europe could be alternatively distributed. We begin with the German-Turkish artist Viron Erol Vert, who transforms the gallery into a »Dreamatory«, a kind of sleep laboratory (Schlaflabor) or dreamstitute (Traumstitut). The Performance duo Driftmachine creates peculiar ‘spherical’ sounds which reference the gods of Sleep, namely, Morpheus, Phobetor and Phantasos.

Viron Erol Vert utilizes these background sonorities in his exhibition arrangement of twelve different beds, each with matching bedside tables and lamps, tailored to the varying comfort needs of individual sleepers and transforms the gallery into a protected, democratic space for dreaming. In this artificially created sleep lab, people can gather and consciously take the time to share their dreams from the past night, and jot them down. You can even lay down for a siesta and rest here.

On specific dates, dream interpreters are invited to interpret the visitor’s dreams upon request. Each day, a dream of the day is selected and published in the »Dreamatory«, thus the dreams are given space to drift into everyday life. The exhibition features a connected library, the »Dreamatory Wisdom Center«, where specialist literature is offered on the subject of dreams in science and mythology, into which one can delve with its dimly lit reading lamps.

Vert provides us with the »Dreamatory«, at a time when we are silenced in the face of war, acts of terrorism, and right-wing populism, in which both the words, as well as the spaces, are missing for us to express ourselves and communicate with one another. It thus offers a refuge in which we are able to momentarily escape the outside world, to engage with our dreams and fears and process our experiences.

Just as the exhibition title is taken from a poem by Viron Erol Vert, the exhibition presents a transcription of his poetry within the space. In the context of the subconsciousness of sleep and dreams, the exhibition aims to bring together reflections and resistances from the socio-political sphere. It proposes a space in which a community is created where non-angst and non-silence can be explored and practiced. Furthermore, the exhibition brings into consideration the fact that while we all have the ability to dream, it is also a luxury to remember our own dreams, as the brutality of reality can result in the silencing of them.

In diesem letzten Konzert aus ihrer Oneiro Trilogie in der Galerie Wedding verweben Driftmachine die einzelnen, sich auf die drei Schlafgötter aus Ovids Metamorphosen beziehenden Klangstücke zu einem großen, vibrierenden Werk mit quasi vollständiger Schlafgötter-Besetzung.
