In der Ausstellung stellt Thomias Radin in der Galerie Wedding sein neu geschaffenes Wandgemälde „Der Mythos von Karukera und Cibuqueira” vor. Der Titel lehnt an die Eigennamen der beiden Hauptinseln von Guadeloupe an. Mit dem Wandgemälde knüpft Radin eine Geschichte rund um die Bedingung des Menschseins, die Kraft der Bewegung und die fortwährende Bedeutung von Mythen für unser Weltbild.

Um 19 Uhr wird Radin das Wandbild im Rahmen der Finissage durch Klang und Bewegung in einer Performance aktivieren. Um 15 Uhr führen Thomias Radin und Malte Pieper durch die Ausstellung. Der Ausstellungsrundgang findet auf englischer Lautsprache und deutscher Gebärdensprache (DGS) statt. Auch eine Übersetzung in deutsche Lautsprache ist möglich.

Thomias Radin premieres his newly created mural ›The Myth of Karukera and Cibuqueira‹, inspired by the two native names of the main islands of Guadeloupe. Radin weaves a story exploring the human condition, the power of movement, and the enduring relevance of myth in shaping our understanding of the world.

For the finissage ceremony, at 7 pm Radin activates the work in a performance with sound and movement. At 3 pm, Thomias Radin and Malte Pieper propose a tour in the exhibition in English spoken language and German sign language. Translation to German spoken language available.

knwn.labs, bestehend aus Oscar Ngu Atanga und Phillipp Och, werden bei der Finissage von POLYCHROME eine audiovisuelle Installation mit dem Titel »Swim or Sway« präsentieren. Die Installation zeigt auch einen Kurzfilm mit Tianna Strickland und AUCO und ist inspiriert von der drexcyanischen Mythologie und dem Werk von Thomias Radin, insbesondere dem Mythos von Karukera und Cibuqueira.

Im Austausch mit Thomias Radins aktueller Ausstellung POLYCHROME – The Myth of Karukera and Cibuqueira in der Galerie Wedding

Am Samstag, 19.8.2023, von 17.30 bis 22 Uhr lädt das Kollektiv afro.bahn zu The Creation of New Mythologies ein, einem Abend mit immersiven Klängen und Bildern im Gespräch mit Thomias Radins Ausstellung in der Galerie Wedding. „The Creation of New Mythologies“ ist eine panafrikanische Reise, die durch gesprochenes Wort, elektronische Live-Performance, Film und Ton erzählt wird und das Publikum durch die Welten führt, die durch Thomias Radins Wandgemälde geschaffen wurden. Afro.bahn ist ein Kollektiv afro-diasporischer multidisziplinärer Künstler*innen, die afro-futuristische Mythen durch audiovisuelle Performances und Installationen erforschen. Gemeinsam kombinieren sie Klang- und Filmideen, überlagern Gesang und Poesie mit afrikanischen Polyrhythmen über futuristischen elektronischen Beats. Seine Mitglieder sind Oscar Ngu Atanga alias O.N.A, ein in Manchester geborener kamerunischer Klangkünstler, Kurator und Selektor, Makossiri, eine in Kenia geborene und in Berlin ansässige Produzentin/DJ elektronischer Musik, deren Clubmusik, sich über Genregrenzen hinwegsetzt, Phillip Och ist ein multi-disziplinärer Bild- und Audiokünstler, der zwischen London und Berlin arbeitet, und Tianna Strickland, eine bildende Künstlerin mit Schwerpunkt auf analoger Fotografie.

„Unsere Arbeit ist eine Reflexion unserer Erfahrungen als in Europa lebende und arbeitende Künstler afrikanischer Herkunft, einschließlich der Kultur, Bräuche und Mythologien, die wir mitbringen. Neben den Wurzeln der Orte, aus denen wir kommen, gibt es auch bidirektionale Einflüsse der Räume, die wir bewohnen. In Echtzeit werden wir die Wahrnehmung dieser unzähligen Einflüsse präsentieren und hinterfragen.“

On Saturday, 19 August 2023, from 5.30 to 10 pm, afro.bahn collective invites you to The Creation of New Mythologies, an evening of immersive sonics and visuals in conversation with Thomias Radin’s exhibition at Galerie Wedding. The Creation of New Mythologies is a pan-African journey, told through spoken word, live electronic performance, film and sound that will move the audience through the worlds created by Thomias Radin’s mural. Afro.bahn is a collective of afro diasporic multi-displinary artists exploring afro-futuristic myths through audio visual performances and installations. Together, they combine ideas of sound and film layering song and poetry with african polyrhythms over futuristic electronic beats. It’s members are Oscar Ngu Atanga aka O.N.A, a Manchester born Cameroonian sound artist, curator and selector, Makossiri, a Kenyan born-berlin based electronic music producer/DJ who makes club music that defies genre limitations, Phillip Och is a multi-displinary visual and audio artist creating between London and Berlin and Tianna Strickland, a visual artist focusing on analog photography.

“Our work is a reflection on our experiences as artists of African heritage living and working in Europe including the culture, customs and mythologies we bring with us. Alongside the roots of the places we come from sits the bi-directional influences of the spaces we come to inhabit. In real time we will present and challenge the perceptions of these myriad influences.”

Im Sommer 2023 entfaltet sich Thomias Radins besondere Praxis der Verschmelzung von Tanz und Malerei in der Galerie Wedding als Wandbild, Bewegung und Szenografie für Performances. Seine farbintensive Malerei streckt sich als Installation durch den großen Galerieraum und bildet den Rahmen für das Tanz- und Performanceprogramm Movement Research ACROSS: POLY(e)MOTION. 

POLYCHROME – The Myth of Karukera and Cibuqueira erprobt Radin die schwer fassbare und doch fesselnde Natur eines Mythos, der von den indigenen Namen des heutigen Guadeloupe erzählt. Er erforscht die Fähigkeit des Mythos, die Wahrheit sowohl zu enthüllen als auch zu verbergen, so zeigen seinen Malereien oft verdrehte Körperhaltungen, Masken und abgewandte Gesichter. »Der Mythos von Karukera und Cibuqueira« behandelt die Bedingungen und Umstände des Menschseins, die Kraft der Bewegung und die fortdauernde Bedeutung von Erzählungen für unser Weltverständnis. Mythen faszinieren Radin als hochentwickeltes und ausgeklügeltes Kommunikationssystem. Für Radin ist der Mythos ein sich bewegendes und tanzendes Wissen, das sich wandelt, alt und modern zugleich ist. Die Ausstellung nimmt Bezug auf die vorkolonialen Bezeichnungen Karukera, »Insel der schönen Gewässer«, und Cibuqueira, »Insel der Gummibäume«, die präkolonialen Namen für die beiden Hauptinseln von Guadeloupe. Karukera und Cibuqueira sind in Radins Geschichte zwei gefallene Engel, die auf der Suche nach ihrer Vereinigung sind. Sie stehen für die transformative Kraft der Bewegung, die uns mit uns selbst, miteinander und mit der Welt um uns herum verbindet.

Radin, geboren in Guadeloupe, aufgewachsen in Frankreich und heute in Berlin lebend, lässt sich von der Kraft der Bewegung inspirieren, die Südamerika, die Karibik und Westafrika miteinander verbindet, um seine Bilder mit dynamischer Energie und Ausdruck zu erfüllen. Als Tänzer bewegt sich Radin zwischen Hip-Hop, Capoeira und Gwo Ka, der Musik- und Tanzkultur aus Guadeloupe. Angelehnt an die Technik des Sampling aus der Musik mischt Radin historische Referenzen, persönliche Erfahrungen und Popkultur. Das Wandgemälde verbindet dabei den Innenraum der Galerie mit den urbanen Außenräumen der Stadt, die Ausstellung verbindet Bühnenbild, Architektur, Malerei und Klang in einer Bewegung. Das Adjektiv »polychrom«, das aus dem Griechischen abgeleitet ist und »viele Farben« meint, bezieht sich auf eine Vielzahl von Farbtönen und Texturen, aber auch auf einen Poly-Rhythmus von Gesten, Techniken und Medien.

Nach seiner raumgreifenden Installation in der Galerie Wedding wird im Rahmen der Kooperation von Galerie Wedding mit dem KINDL – Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst in der Ausstellung POLY. A Fluid Show, Radins Film »Rivals« in Konstellation mit der Malerei »The Annunciation: Tout‘ Moun doubout`, An nou ay !« im September seine Premiere haben.

In the summer of 2023, Thomias Radin’s distinctive practice of melding dance and painting unfolds at Galerie Wedding as a mural, movement and scenography for performances. His vivid and colourful work stretches through the large gallery space as an installation and forms the framework for the dance and performance programme Movement Research ACROSS: POLY(e)MOTION.

In POLYCHROME – The Myth of Karukera and Cibuqueira, Radin explores the elusive and captivating nature of a myth that talks about the indigenous names of today’s Guadeloupe. He delves into into the ability of myth to both reveal and conceal the truth, often showing twisted postures, masks and averted faces in his paintings. „The Myth of Karukera and Cibuqueira“ is an invitation to explore the human condition, the power of movement, and the enduring relevance of myth in shaping our understanding of the world. Myths fascinate Radin as a highly advanced and sophisticated communication system. For Radin, myth is a moving and dancing knowledge, morphing and travelling, ancient and modern at the same time. The exhibition refers to the pre-colonial names Karukera, „island of the beautiful waters“, and Cibuqueira, „island of the gum-trees“, the native names for the two main islands of Guadeloupe. In Radin’s story, Karukera and Cibuqueira are two fallen angels on a quest to be reunited. They represent the transformative power of movement, which connects us to ourselves, each other and to the world around us.

Born in Guadeloupe, raised in France and now living in Berlin, Radin draws inspiration from the power of movement that connects South America, the Caribbean and West Africa to infuse his images with dynamic energy and expression. As a dancer, Radin moves between Hip-Hop, Capoeira and Gwo Ka, the music and dance culture from Guadeloupe. Borrowing the technique of sampling from music, Radin mixes historical references, personal experiences and pop culture. The mural thereby unites the indoor gallery space to the outdoors, the exhibition combines stage design, architecture, painting and sound in one movement. The adjective „polychrome“, which is derived from the Greek and means „many colours“, refers to a multiplicity of shades and textures, but also to a poly-rhythm of gestures, techniques and media.

Following his spatial installation at Galerie Wedding, in the context of the cooperation between Galerie Wedding and KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art, in the exhibition POLY. A Fluid Show, Radin’s film „Rivals“ will have its premiere in tandem with the painting „The Annunciation: Tout‘ Moun doubout`, An nou ay !“ in September.
