Auf Einladung der Galerie Wedding hat Ingrid Ogenstedt eine fast vier Meter hohe Skulptur für den Rathausvorplatz in Wedding entwickelt. Die Form erinnert an ein monumentales Tor oder Portal, überwachsen mit Gras. “Surplus” bedeutet Mehrertrag oder Überschuss. Die Arbeit untersucht, wie wir im 21. Jahrhundert wachsen können und ist Teil des Programms “Anders Existieren” in der Galerie Wedding. Das grüne Portal wird bis zum 21. Juli im öffentlichen Raum zu erleben sein.

Ogenstedt arbeitet mit großformatigen skulpturalen Projekten und Zeichnungen. Für ihre skulpturalen Arbeiten verwendet sie natürliche Materialien, um die Idee von Natur und Kultur als polare Gegensätze zu hinterfragen. Die Skulpturen werden oft vor Ort gebaut und existieren in einem zeitlich und räumlich begrenzten Zustand.

„Der Platz ist eine offene Fläche innerhalb der Stadt. Ein Raum, in dem Menschen interagieren können und auf dem Dinge passieren können. Der Rathausvorplatz ist umgeben von öffentlichen Gebäuden wie der Agentur für Arbeit (Jobcenter), der Stadtbibliothek und dem Bezirksamt. In den letzten Jahren der Covid-Beschränkungen war das Arbeitsamt ein wichtiger Ort und wir leben in einer Zeit, in der Menschen in systemrelevant und nicht systemrelevant eingeteilt werden. Überschuss ist das, was durch Anstrengung und gemeinsames Arbeiten erwirtschaftet wird, ein Zeichen von Reichtum und Wohlstand. Können wir wirklich über unsere gesellschaftliche Relevanz definiert werden?“, fragt Ingrid Ogenstedt.

Das Gras ist für Ogenstedt ein Zeichen für kultivierte Natur. Natur wird kultiviert, um den menschlichen Zwecken angepasst zu werden – der perfekte Rasen wird geschnitten. Ogenstedt befestigt das Gras auf der skulpturalen Form und gibt ihm Struktur. Mit der Zeit trennt sich das Werk von der Künstlerin und steht für sich selbst, um zu wachsen, zu atmen, zu verrotten oder zu zerfallen. Die Skulptur ist fortlaufend im Wandel.

Ingrid Ogenstedt has developed an almost four-metre-high sculpture for the Rathausvorplatz in Wedding at the invitation of Galerie Wedding. The structure is reminiscent of a monumental gate or portal, overgrown with grass. The work „Surplus“ explores how we can grow in the 21st century and is part of the programme „Existing Otherwise“ at Galerie Wedding. The green portal will be on view in public space until 21 July.

Ogenstedt works with large scale sculptural projects and drawings. For her sculptural works she uses natural materials as a way of questioning the idea of nature and culture as polar opposites. The sculptures are often built on-site and then exist within a temporary setting and state.

„The square is an open glade within the city. A space for people to interact and where events can accrue. The square Rathausvorplatz is surrounded by public buildings such as the employment office, The cities library and the district office. During the past year of Covid restrictions, the employment office has been a vital place and we have been living in a time where people are divided into system-relevant and non-system-relevant. Surplus is what is generated through effort and working together, a sign of wealth and prosperity. Can we be defined through our social relevance?“, asks Ingrid Ogenstedt.

Ogenstedt considers grass a marker for cultivated nature. Nature is cultivated to suit our human purposes – the perfect grass is cut. Ogenstedt sews the grass to the form and gives it a structure. At some point, the work separates from the artist and stands on its own, to grow, to breathe, to rot or to decay. The transformation is ongoing and a movement in time.
