Statement zur Doppelnutzung der Galerie-Räume in Corona-Zeiten
Im Rahmen des Pandemieplans des Sozialamtes ist die Galerie Wedding als Wartebereich, Frontdesk und Aufrufbereich seit dem 13. März 2020 umfunktioniert worden. Nun werden in der Galerie an den Werktagen vor der regulären Öffnungszeit von 9 bis 11 Uhr Bedürftige zur Gewährung der Grundsicherung beraten und unterstützt. Nach der Tätigkeit des Sozialamts wird die Galerie Wedding seit 11.06.2020 in den gleichen Räumen regulär geöffnet. Diese Tatsache schränkt die Abläufe des Ausstellungsbetriebs jedoch gravierend ein.
Rein organisatorisch war bedeutend, dass die Arbeit des Sozialamts nicht eingeschränkt wird, was die davon abweichenden Öffnungszeiten der Galerie gewährleisten. Hinzu kam die Bitte vom Sozialamt den Ausstellungsbetrieb in die Situation zu integrieren. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung Gift von Julian Irlinger (11.06. – 25.07.20) wurden die provisorisch aufgestellten Möbel des Amtes in die Präsentation des Künstlers einbezogen. Die Künstler*innen und die Kurator*innen der kommenden Gruppenausstellung And that Song is Our Amulet
(06.08. – 03.09.20), die in Kooperation mit dem Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD entstanden ist, haben sich entschieden, die Situation der Wartenden sowie die Mitarbeiter*innen des Amt für Soziales und der Galerie Wedding direkt anzusprechen und durch eine ortsspezifische Intervention die aktuellen Rahmenbedingungen von allen Beteiligten zu verbessern.
Mehr als je brauchen wir einander.
Unsere Sympathie gilt den Bürger*innen, die auf die Unterstützung durch das Sozialamt angewiesen sind. Die Galerie Wedding versteht daher die bis 30.09.20 stattfindenden Ausstellungen als Angebot für alle Besucher*innen, die in unsere Räume kommen, ob morgens für eine Antragstellung im Sozialamt oder im Laufe des Tages für den Ausstellungsbesuch.
Die derzeitigen künstlerischen Interventionen innerhalb der besonderen räumlichen und gesellschaftlichen Umstände begegnen diesen durch die Pandemie bedingten Herausforderungen mit bewundernswerter Empathie und solidarischem Einsatz für alle Beteiligten. An dieser Stelle bedanken wir uns dafür insbesondere bei den Künstler*innen und unseren Partner*innen.
Für die Gesundheit der Gesellschaft, die lokale Situation im Wedding und Berlin, sind das Soziale und die Kunst systemrelevante Bereiche, die existentielle Funktionen erfüllen. Die Galerie Wedding, einer der profiliertesten und lokal aktivsten kommunalen Kunsträume, ruft zu einer demokratischen und solidarischen Haltung und zum Respekt gegenüber der Kunst, den Künstler*inneren und unserem Programm, den Besucher*innen und den Mitarbeiter*innen gegenüber auf.
Wir brauchen unsere Ausstellungsräume jedoch so bald wie möglich bis spätestens 01.10.2020 als freien Kunstraum zurück, um die drängenden Fragen zu dem gegenwärtigen sozialen wie ökonomischen ‘Kollaps’ durch ästhetische Sprachen formulieren und damit einhergehenden und immer dringender werdenden Auseinandersetzungen kreativ mitgestalten zu können. Die künstlerische Spiegelung der derzeitigen Krise untersucht wie wir nach vorne schauend durch die Herausforderungen kommen können und müssen.
Mehr als je brauchen wir Orte, wo wir als Menschen frei atmen können.

Statement on the shared use of the exhibition space in the times of Corona
As part of the pandemic plan of the social welfare office, Galerie Wedding has been transformed into a waiting room, front desk and consultation area since March 13, 2020. This has been done without prior dialogue with the direction of Galerie Wedding.
Before the regular opening hours from 9 to 11 a.m. during the working days, the people in need of social welfare are being advised and supported in the space of Galerie Wedding to obtain basic social security. Following the activities of the social welfare office, Galerie Wedding has been open regularly in the same space since June 11, 2020. This situation, however, significantly limits the work of the exhibition space.
From a strictly organisational point of view, it was important that the operations of the social welfare office were not restricted, which was then ensured. Besides, the social welfare office requested that the planned exhibitions should be integrated into the existing situation. In the context of the exhibition Gift by Julian Irlinger (11.06. – 25.07.20) the provisionally installed furniture of the social office was included in the presentation of the artist. The artists and the curators of the upcoming group exhibition And that Song is Our Amulet (06.08. – 03.09.20), which was conceived in cooperation with the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), have decided to address the situation of the people waiting for social services as well as the staff of the social welfare office and the team of Galerie Wedding directly and to improve the current working and waiting conditions of all those involved through a site-specific intervention.
More than ever, we need each other.
Our solidarity is directed towards the citizens who are dependent on the support of the social welfare office. Therefore, Galerie Wedding conceives the exhibitions taking place until September 30, 2020, as an offer for all visitors who come to our space, either in the morning for an application to the social office or during the day for a regular gallery visit.
The current artistic interventions within this very special spatial and social circumstances respond to the challenges caused by the pandemic with admirable empathy and solidarity for all involved. We would like to take this opportunity to thank especially the artists and our partners.
For the health of the society, the local situation in Wedding and Berlin, the both social and art are system-relevant areas that fulfil existential functions. Galerie Wedding, one of the most profiled and locally active municipal art spaces, appeals for a democratic and solidaristic attitude and respect towards art, the artists and our program, the visitors and the staff.
However, we need our exhibition space back as a space of free art as soon as possible, by October 1, 2020 at the latest, to be able to formulate the urgent questions about the current social and economic ‚collapse‘ through aesthetic languages and to creatively shape the increasingly acute discussions that accompany them. The artistic reflection of the current crisis explores how we can and must look forward to the challenges ahead.
More than ever, we need places where we can breathe freely as human beings.

Hintergrund SoS Programm in Galerie Wedding Unter dem Begriff SoS – Soft Solidarity (2019/20) greift das Kuratoren Team Nataša Ilić und Solvej Helweg Ovesen auch in diesem Jahr in der Galerie Wedding aktuelle Positionen von in Berlin lebenden Künstler*innen und Partner*innen aus aller Welt auf und bringt sie mit anthropologischen, gesellschaftspolitischen, aber auch ganz alltäglichen Fragen in Verbindung. Das Thema Soft Solidarity (SoS) verbindet die Vergangenheit des Berliner Stadtviertels Wedding mit der Gegenwart und schaut auf dessen Zeit als Arbeiterbezirk zurück, als es unter »Roter Wedding« bekannt war. »Links, Links, Links – der rote Wedding marschiert!«, so klangen die Parolen der 1930er Jahre. Was den Wedding heute charakterisiert, ist die Gemengelage einer post-industriellen und post-migrantischen Bevölkerung und deren aktuellem Bedürfnis, die Gemeingüter dieses Stadtteils neu zu erfassen und zu definieren. Unter dem Titel SoS entstand auch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem Berliner Künstlerprogramm DAAD für die Ausstellung And that Song is Our Amulet (06.08.- 03.09.20) mit Burak Delier, Ieva Epnere, Runo Lagomarsino kuratiert von Malte Roloff und Melanie Roumiguière da Silva. Diese Ausstellung beabsichtigt die ungewöhnliche Situation in der Galerie Wedding für alle Beteiligten zu verbessern. *** Background SoS program at Galerie Wedding Under the title SoS – Soft Solidarity (2019/20), the curatorial team Nataša Ilić and Solvej Helweg Ovesen are again this year taking up current positions of artists and partners from all over the world living in Berlin and linking them with anthropological, socio-political, but also ordinary everyday questions. The theme Soft Solidarity (SoS) connects the past of the Berlin district of Wedding with the present and looks back on its time as a workers‘ district, when it was known as „Red Wedding“. „Left, left, left – Red Wedding is marching“, that’s how the slogans of the 1930s used to sound. What defines Wedding today is the mixture of a post-industrial and post-migrant population and their current need to reappraise and redefine the shared goods of this district. Under the title SoS, a collaboration with the Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme DAAD was also established to realise the Exhibition And that Song is Our Amulet (6.08.-03.09.2020), with Burak Delier, Ieva Epnere, Runo Lagomarsino, curated by Malte Roloff and Melanie Roumiguière da Silva. This exhibition aims to improve the unusual situation at Galerie Wedding for all involved.
