Simon Fujiwaras Film »Joanne« zeigt die vielen Gesichter von Joanne, Simon Fujiwaras ehemaligen Gymnasiallehrerin. Joanne Salley, Gewinnerin des Miss-Nordirland-Schönheitswettbewerbs 1998, Künstlerin, Lehrerin und Boxmeisterin, hatte einen prägenden Einfluss auf Fujiwara und förderte sein kreatives Talent als Stipendiat an der angesehenen Harrow School für Jungen.
Einige Jahre nach seinem Abgang fand Joanne sich in Mitten eines zerstörerischen britischen Boulevard-Skandals nachdem Schüler Oben-ohne-Fotos von ihr, die privat gemacht wurden, entdeckt und in Umlauf gebracht hatten.
Die darauffolgende Medienkampagne spielte auf weibliche Stereotypen an, um die sensationellen Schlagzeilen zu bekräftigen und ihren Ruf als Lehrerin und öffentliche Person zu zerstören. In dem Versuch gegen die Medien anzukämpfen, die sie als »Oben-ohne-Lehrerin« stigmatisierten, starteten Fujiwara und Joanne mit der Produktion eines Kurzfilms, der sich mit den Themen, mit denen sich Salley im Zuge des Skandals konfrontiert sah, befasste, um einen neuen und authentischeren öffentlichen Eindruck von ihr zu schaffen.
Die Ausstellung wird im Rahmen des zweijährigen Ausstellungsprogramms »Unsustainable Privileges« 2017/18 gezeigt, das die Vorstellung von Privilegien im nordeuropäischen, kapitalistischen und patriarchalen Kontext hinterfragt.

Simon Fujiwara’s film »Joanne« depicts the many faces of Joanne, Simon Fujiwara’s former secondary school teacher. Joanne Salley, winner of the 1998 Miss Northern Ireland beauty pageant, artist, teacher and champion boxer had a formative influence on Fujiwara, nurturing his creative talents as a scholarship student at the prestigious Harrow School for boys.
Some years after his departure, Joanne found herself at the centre of a damaging British tabloid scandal after students discovered and circulated topless photographs of her that had been taken privately.
The media campaign that followed played on stereotypes of women to support the sensational headlines, tarnishing her reputation as a teacher and public persona. In an attempt to fight the media’s branding of her as the »Topless Teacher«, Fujiwara and Joanne embarked on the production of a short film that explores issues Salley faced in the wake of the scandal as she seeks to craft a new, more authentic public image.
The exhibition is presented in the context of the two year long exhibition programme »Unsustainable Privileges« 2017/18 which questions the concept of privilege in a north-european, capitalist, and patriarchal context.
