Ausschreibung – Residenzprogramm für Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen aus Berlin und Lagos 2018
Am 20.12.2017 werden zwei Ausschreibungen für die Neuauflage und Erweiterung des in 2015 begonnenen Residenzprogramms für junge Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen zwischen den Städten Berlin und Lagos veröffentlicht. Das Programm ist ein Kooperationsprojekt des Goethe-Instituts Nigeria und der Arthouse Foundation Lagos auf der nigerianischen Seite mit dem Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik (ZK/U), SAVVY Contemporary, dem Amt für Weiterbildung und Kultur/ Fachbereich Kunst und Kultur in Verbindung mit der Galerie Wedding – Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst auf Berliner Seite.
Ziel des Austauschprogramms ist seit seiner Gründung im Juli 2015 die Schaffung eines sehr individualisierten Angebots, dass neben der Ermöglichung eines mehrwöchigen Arbeitsaufenthaltes in der jeweils anderen Stadt, auch einen Einblick in die Arbeit der Partner-Institutionen mit Beratungs,- Kontakt,- und Austauschmöglichkeiten, sowie die Präsentation von Arbeitsergebnissen in verschiedenen Formaten enthält. Den Anfang machte 2015 der Künstler und Kurator Folakunle Oshun aus Lagos. Im folgenden Jahr präsentierte die Performance- und Videokünstlerin Tito Aderemi-Ibitola ihre Projekte, in denen sie sich mit weiblicher Identität, Geschlechterrollen und Rassismus befasste.
Dank des hinzugekommenen Partners Arthouse Foundation Lagos, kann das Austauschprogramm 2018 bilateral stattfinden. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich erstmalig auch an junge Künstler*innen und Kurator*innen mit Wohnsitz in Berlin und das Programm ermöglicht nun zusätzlich zwei sechs-wöchige Aufenthalte in Lagos. Etwa zeitgleich findet in Berlin eine dreimonatige Residenz für eine/n Künstler*in/Kurator*in aus Lagos statt. Die insgesamt drei Künstler*innen/Kurator*innen des Programms werden miteinander vernetzt. Für das Goethe-Institut Nigeria, welches die Aufenthalte finanziell fördert, bedeutet dieser Austausch eine weitere Vertiefung des künstlerischen Austauschs zwischen Deutschland und Nigeria und für die interessierte Öffentlichkeit in beiden Städten eine weitere Möglichkeit des Perspektivwechsels.
Erforderlich für die Bewerbung ist die Beschreibung eines Projektvorhabens in einem frei wählbaren Medium der bildenden Kunst und/oder Performance zum Thema „Unsustainable Privileges“. Was bedeutet es heute Privilegien zu besitzen, sie zu verlieren oder neue zu erwerben? Welche neuen Blickwinkel, Räume, Archäologien und sozialen Zirkulationen sehen wir unter dem Einfluss der globalen Migrationsbewegungen? Haben Privilegien eine Zukunft? Wie könnten diese aussehen?
Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Privilegien ist eine umgekehrte Fragestellung zu der nach dem vom »Othering« geprägten postkolonialen Verhältnis zwischen Nord und Süd. Angestrebt ist ein Vergleich und/oder eine Kollision nördlicher und südlicher Perspektiven, die jede*r Resident*in mitbringt und an dem jeweils anderen Ort erfährt. Das Thema ist eine Aufforderung, die nahe Zukunft lokal zu erforschen und alle Arten und Formen von Privilegien zu untersuchen und in kreativer Sprache eine Neuverhandlung zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Das Goethe-Institut als weltweit tätiges Kulturinstitut fördert die Kenntnis der deutschen Sprache im Ausland, pflegt die internationale kulturelle Zusammenarbeit und vermittelt ein umfassendes Deutschlandbild. In Zeiten neuer globaler Herausforderungen zielt die Arbeit des Goethe-Instituts auf ein vertieftes Verständnis der Kulturen untereinander und auf die Stärkung des Ansehens Deutschlands in der Welt. Derzeit verfügt das Goethe-Institut über 159 Institute in 98 Ländern, davon 12 Goethe-Institut in Deutschland. Im Rahmen von jährlich rund 100 Residenzprogrammen bieten sie vor allem Künstlerinnen und Künstlern aus Deutschland die Gelegenheit, eine Zeit lang im Ausland zu leben und zu arbeiten.

Call for Applications – Residency program for artists and curators from Berlin and Lagos 2018
From 20th December 2017 on two calls for application are open in order to continue the residency program for young artists and curators from the cities of Berlin and Lagos. The project, which was initiated in 2015 and has been renewed and expanded since then, is a cooperation between Goethe-Institut Nigeria and Arthouse Foundation in Lagos and the Center for Art and Urbanistics (ZK/U), SAVVY Contemporary, the Office of Art and Culture in Berlin Mitte in conjunction with Gallery Wedding – Space for Contemporary Art.
Since its beginning, the aim of the exchange program is to offer an individualized opportunity. This includes a working permit expanding over several weeks, consulting, contact, and exchange possibilities and further the opportunity to present the final results within different formats. The first participant has been artist and curator Folakunle Oshun from Lagos followed by performance and video artist Tito Aderemi-Ibitola who presented her projects dealing with identity, gender roles and racism issues in 2016. Thanks to Arthouse Foundation Lagos, who joins the exchange program in 2018, it now works in both directions. This time the call is also directed towards young artists and curators living in Berlin to whom a six-week stay at Lagos is offered. Simultaneously an artist or curator from Lagos will be resident in Berlin for three month. The three participating artists and curators are connected throughout the program and will meet each other.
For Goethe-Institut Nigeria, that finances the residency, the exchange program means a deepening of the relationship between Germany and Nigeria and also an opportunity for a change in perspective with the interested public.
Part of the application should be the description of the intended project. The media can be chosen freely within the field of the visual artists and performances but should deal with the topic of “Unsustainable Privileges”. What does it mean to have privileges, to lose them or to earn some? What new perspectives, spaces, archaeologies and social circulations do we see under the influence of global migration? Do privileges have a future? What could this look like?
The examination of the topic of privileges is a re-directed question about the north and the south that is marked by postcolonial relations. The endeavor is a comparison and/or collision of perspectives from the North and the South that each participated brings into the project and experiences in the particular country. The topic is an invitation to locally explore the recent future and all forms of privileges in order to express a renegotiation in a creative language.
